Hectares, acres, square meters, and square yards (Gaj) are some of the common land measurement units used across India. While Bigha and Marla are commonly used in the North, terms such as Cent, Guntha, and Ground belong to the South. Depending upon the names of the units, their sizes also vary from State to State.

Difference between a Plot and a Ground

While a plot refers to a piece of land, irrespective of its size, a ground is a land area measuring 2,400 sq ft. The land documents, wherein the land is divided into layouts, will usually give the measurement in ground or square feet.

Land measurement units in India differ from state to state. Measurement of land in South states includes Ground, Cent, Ankanam, Guntha, etc. whereas units used in Northern India is done in units such as Bigha, Biswa, Marla, Kanal, Kattha, etc. Sizes of units like Bigha, Katha and Biswa also vary from state to state.

Although there is an increase in the use of standard terminologies such as Acres, Hectares, Square Feet, Square Yards, and Square Meters, local units are still used all across India for measurement of land.
