National Family Assistance Scheme (Sankat Mochan Yojana)
Under this scheme, if the main breadwinner of the family dies due to natural causes or accident, the following central assistance will be available.

  • In case of death due to natural circumstances, Rs. 20,000 / -
  • In case of death due to accident Rs. 20,000 / -
  • Provision has been made in the scheme to provide higher cash assistance to the family in case of any calamity. Earlier, under this scheme, Rs. 10,000 / - was given. By increasing the amount to Rs. 20000 / - has been done.

In case of such death, the main earner (he or she) should be above 18 years of age and below 30 years of age.
The application has to be made in the prescribed form within the limit of two years after death. To be eligible for assistance under this scheme, the applicant beneficiary should be a BPL beneficiary as per the guideline of Government of India. If the applicant lives in a rural area, he should be registered as a BPL beneficiary in the village panchayat, in the municipality or in the municipal area, in the office of the municipality or corporation.
Postmortem report of the person involved in the accident, police complaint, copy of Punchnama have to be attached with the application form.
Only one person as the head of the deceased family has to apply as an applicant and all the members of the family have to give their consent. This assistance is not available to each family member separately.
The definition of family for the purpose of this scheme includes spouses, minor children, unmarried daughters and dependent parents.

Where to apply?
For an urban area one has to apply to the provincial office of that area.
For Gram Panchayat Area - Under this scheme application has to be made to the Deputy District Development Officer.
For Municipal Area - Commissioner UCD in the office of the Corporation. Must apply at the branch. The authority to sanction assistance under this scheme is vested in the above officer and the application form will also be available from his office.

Who can benefit?The main beneficiary of a family with a poverty line score of 0 to 20 (male or female) dies naturally or accidentally.The deceased male or female should be above 18 years of age and below 30 years of age.Must apply within 3 years of death.
